GameDev Blog: Goblin Rules Football #1

I guess I never “announced” on here that I starting working on a new “game” tentatively titled Goblin Rules Football. It is supposed to end up being a “sports” game where you play as goblins playing their special version of football (they run around punching each other).

The idea for it came when I was watching “The History of the Atlanta Falcons” by SB Nation and they made a brief mention about a game called “Jerry Glanville’s Pigskin Footbrawl.” It’s a game that was a port of  Pigskin 621 A.D. where “Romans” and “Vikings” play football against each other by beating each other up. In the Jerry Glanville version you can also spot Elvis and get points for that or something. Anyway it reminded me a lot of arcade games I played as a kid. Specifically arcade games I’d play at some pizza parlor that had 3 random cabinets of games you’d never heard of and they would go out of business within a year so you’d get to play a game once and then never again for the rest of your life. That rush of nostalgia made me think about making my own game like that and thus I imagined “Goblin Rules Football.”

This is the first time I’ve really tried to make “art” for a game. I bought the tool Aseprite from Humble Bundle when it was on sale for $15 (it’s $20 at the time of writing this) to create what could be generously called pixel “art.” To teach myself the new tool and also how art animation sort of work, I did tutorials from Saultoons and AdamCYounis. I recommend checking both of them out. They’re really good! Much better than my art!

Anyway, here’s what some of the goblins look like

Here’s some running! I had to make animations!

A test “field” to play on

And here’s a youtube video of the “game” so far. It’s just me testing out some features on the game. Moving goblins around. Switching between the goblins on your team. Picking up the ball. Passing. Punching. Fumbling after being knocked out. Slide tackles to trip goblins. Nothing very exciting.

Maybe someday this will end up being a fun game.

Smell ya later nerds!
